The
history of the church of Christ of Florence began
in July 1953 with the presence of Carl and Frankie
Mitchell and Lido and Tina Petrini. Emilio Fancelli
was the first to be baptized in September of the
same year.
The
church of Christ of Florence slowly came together,
the group met Sunday afternoons to get better acquainted
and to discuss their beliefs. After several months,
some free studies to learn English, combined with
Bible studies, were developed, and some 70 students
were enrolled. After four months, seven students
accepted Christ by baptism.
As
time went by, the situation became more complicated:
Carl Mitchell was charged by the police and was
not allowed to teach English without the permission
of the Department of Public Education. In spite
of his formal request, in the answer which arrived
two years later, he was confirmed denial of the
use of English study for propaganda for the church
of Christ. In the meantime however, the brethren
had not lost hope and at the end of three laborious
years, they had brought the number of baptized believers
to 55.
The
disaster of the flood (November 1966) did not spare
the meeting place, at the time in Via dei Saponai,
just a few meters from the Arno river. Thanks to
the solidarity of many brethren, the church of Christ
of Florence was able to purchase the Ex-Cappella
Demidoff in Via San Donato, the present church building.
The
Bible School of Florence, a christian theology
school, was founded in 1958. It is presently located
in Scandicci (Le Bagnese) as a center for studies
on evangelism.
